Orally, chondroitin sulfate is used for osteoarthritis. Chondroitin sulfate is frequently used in combination with other products, including manganese ascorbate, glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, or N-acetyl glucosamine for osteoarthritis. Chondroitin sulfate is also used orally for ischemic heart disease, osteoporosis, and hyperlipidemia. Chondroitin is also used in a complex with iron for treating iron-deficiency anemia.
Intramuscularly, chondroitin sulfate is used for osteoarthritis.
Topically, chondroitin sulfate is used for keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eyes), as a viscoelastic agent in cataract surgery, and as a medium for preservation of corneas used for transplantation. Chondroitin sulfate is also used topically in combination with other products for osteoarthritis.
