You can search for natural medicines...common names...scientific names...brand names of commercial products...names of drugs...conditions or diseases...alternative treatment modalities...anything, all in one easy place. You can use this search when you want to get information about a certain product. For example, if you search for ginkgo in this section, you'll be searching for natural medicines and commercial products that list ginkgo in their product name, common name, scientific name, or brand name. Your results will be a listing of the Ginkgo monograph and all brand name products which list Ginkgo in the name of the product. If you are looking for all brand name products which have ginkgo as an ingredient, click "Brand Names" from the Ginkgo monograph. This generates a list of all brand name products that contain Ginkgo. It also lists brand name products that contain Ginkgo, but use a different name such as Bai Guo or Kew Tree. Natural Product Effectiveness Checker

Use this search to find products with Effectiveness ratings for various conditions or diseases. Enter the name of any disease or condition and click “Search.” You’ll get an evidence-based Effectiveness rating for each natural medicine in the Database linked to that condition. The Effectiveness ratings are listed in order from most to least effective.

Natural Product/Drug Interaction Checker

Use this search to find potential interactions between conventional drugs and natural medicines. There are several ways that you can use this search to quickly find just the specific info about interactions that you need. You can enter any conventional drug name such as Prozac or acetaminophen, any herb or supplement such as echinacea or glucosamine, or any brand name supplement combination product such as FLUIDjoint or Metabolife. Then just click the "Add" button. If you aren't sure how to spell the name of the drug or supplement, use the browse feature. The browse option will display an alphabetical listing of thousands of products that you can choose from. Once you've found the name you are looking for, just click the "Add to List" link. Once you've added all the products, click the "Check Interactions" button. You'll get a report showing any potential interactions. Remember, this feature checks for interactions between conventional drugs and supplements. It does NOT check for drug-drug interactions.

Nutrient Depletion Checker

Many conventional medications have the potential to cause nutrients within the body to become depleted. In some cases nutrient levels can fall below normal levels. Supplements are sometimes needed to correct deficiency caused by these medications. Use the Nutrient Depletion Checker to find out which nutrients might be depleted by medications. Additionally, each potential nutrient depletion issue is rated based on the clinical significance of the depletion. A rating of Major, Moderate or Minor reflects whether supplements might be necessary or not. To search, enter a conventional medication name, such as "Prilosec" or "orlistat", and click "add". If the medication name is not an exact match, select the correct medication from the displayed list and click "Add to list." Repeat the search to add all medications being taken or considered. Once all the medications are listed, click "Check Nutrient Depletion".

List of Natural Medicines & Ingredients

You can use "Browse the List of Natural Medicines" to scroll through the thousands of natural medicines that are listed in the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database and click on the one you want to read. This is especially helpful when you aren't sure of the exact spelling of a product. By scrolling through the alphabetical listings, you're most likely to find your product using this search. This browse contains Herb/Supplement common names and scientific names.

List of Commercial Products

You can use "Browse the List of Commercial Products" to scroll through over 49,000 commercially available products that are listed in the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database and click on the specific product for which you need information. USP Verified Products are included in this list, but are also listed in the separate “List of USP Verified Products.” To find all products listed for a manufacturer, do an Advanced Search by manufacturer name.

List of USP Verified Products

You can use the "Browse the List of USP Verified Products" to find the products that have receive USP verification. USP verification involves rigorous testing and auditing to identify if the product consistently meets USP’s high standards. The USP Verified Mark assures that the product: Contains the ingredients listed on the product label, in the declared strengths and amounts Does not contain harmful levels of contaminants Will break down and release ingredients in the body within a specified amount of time Has been made under Good Manufacturing Practices USP Verified products are also identified with the USP Verified Mark wherever they are listed in Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database.

List of Alternative Treatment Modalities

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database includes evidence-based information on Alternative Treatment Modalities as well as natural medicine products. Select the name of the alternative treatment modality from the alphabetical list for evidence-based Safety Ratings and Effectiveness Ratings. Information on Safety, the Mechanism of Action, what the modality is commonly used for and additional common names is also included.

List of Diseases & Conditions

You can use "Browse the List of Diseases & Conditions" to scroll through the conditions or diseases. This is especially helpful when you aren't sure of the exact spelling of the condition you are looking for...or when you need to expand or refine your search. For example, let's say you need some specific info about treating "diabetes." By browsing the "D" section, you'll see listings for "diabetes," "diabetes-associated dyslipidemia," "diabetic nephropathy," "diabetic neuropathy," and "diabetic retinopathy." Once you select a disease or condition, you’ll see the Effectiveness Ratings for all natural medicine linked to that disease or condition.

Advanced Search

The Advanced Search is a very valuable tool! You can click any or all of the 18 fields, so you can search the database selectively--you search only in the fields that you choose. At first, all fields are selected--this is the default setting. You can select and deselect fields by clicking the check boxes. Here are three examples to illustrate the power of our Advanced Search. EXAMPLE 1: You are researching fibromyalgia, so you want all the info on fibromyalgia in our database... Make sure all field boxes are checked. Type the word fibromyalgia in the Keyword(s) text box below the list of fields. Click on the Search button. In this case, you'll get a list of results that include all occurrences of the word fibromyalgia in our database. Notice that the list tells you which fields fibromyalgia appears in! EXAMPLE 2: You want to see a list of herbs that interact with St. John's Wort... to show how to do herb/herb interactions. Because we already have the drug interaction checker, you wouldn't need to use the Advanced Search to check for warfarin interactions. Besides, the Interaction Checker also checks drug classes and would give a more complete list of supplements that interact with warfarin. The Advanced Search gives you 111 results but the Interaction Checker gives you about 130 results and another 30 or so for Oral Drugs. EXAMPLE 3: You want to know which herbs and dietary supplements should be avoided by people with diabetes... Check the Interations with Diseases or Conditions box. Make sure the other check boxes are blank. Type in the word diabetes in the Keyword(s) text box below the list of fields. Click on the Search button. In this case, you'll get a long list of results...all of products that address diabetes in the Interactions with Diseases or Conditions section.
